Harriet Tubman is know as the Moses of Americans of African decent. I was inspired to create this textile art work after reading a book titled, "Hidden in plain view" by Jacqueline L. Tobin and Raymond G. Dobard, Phd. It is a story told by an African American quilter who shared oral history from her ancestors telling the story of quilt blocks that were used as hidden quilt codes directing enslaved people on the route to freedom. In this quilt I created many of the quilt blocks discussed in the book along with a photo transfer image of Harriet Tubman as the center medallion. I used reproduction fabrics reflective of the era prior to the emancipation of enslaved people in 1863.
