“Soul and Spirit” is a mixed media work made with gesso, acrylic paint, paper, metallic varnish, yarn, sealant and a gentle hand. You’ll notice how the light of the cross pierces through the darkness of the canvas: the fabric of humanity, like a sword dividing and discerning the peace that we accept versus the peace we may be created for. This piece is an illustration on the dichotomy of the human experience with soul and spirit. Both words, especially “soul” have had a significant impact on our cultural lexicon and how we express and see ourselves as African Americans. This work serves as an intimate commentary on what it means in process and presentation, to be “soulful” and to bear fruit from a foundational perspective.
